AvanTax eForms

Production Release (2011.1.3.127)

June 28, 2012

June 28, 2012 (Production Release 2011.1.3.127)

1 Corrected an issue with the electronic filing for TFSA contributions where the name, S.I.N. and date of death of the deceased holder was not being included in the electronic submission file in the case where a successor holder was indicated.

March 05, 2012 (Production Release 2011.1.3.126)

1 Corrected an issue with the electronic filing for TFSA contributions where the fair market value at time of death was not reported in the case where the account holder passed away during the year and there was no successor holder.
2 Corrected a problem with the import from an RL-3 XML file which caused the program to generate an error in the situation where the recipient was a corporation and the payer assigned identification number was filled in.

February 21, 2012 (Production Release 2011.1.3.124)

1 We corrected a problem with the RL-1 and RL-3 import from Excel and CSV.   The additional information boxes on these forms were not being imported from the spreadsheet files.
2 We corrected a printing problem on the NR4 slip.  The 'Foreign or Canadian tax identification number' was being printed using the format of a Canadian social insurance number (SIN).  It now prints as entered.

January 30, 2012 (Production Release 2011.1.3.123)

1 A number of refinements have been made to the T4 data entry screen to facilitate the changes that CRA has made to the reporting requirements of EI insurable earnings and CPP pensionable earnings.  This update now will always set these two earnings boxes based on the value entered into box 14 (employment income).  The user may then override these boxes if required.
2 The Quebec TP-600 (Partnership information return) and the associated schedules have been updated for the 2011 taxation year.
3 The Quebec TP-646 (Trust income tax return)  has been updated for the 2011 taxation year.
4 Links to our series of instructional videos have been added to various parts of the program.
5 The federal T1204 slip has been updated for the 2011 taxation year.
6 A new version of the Quebec RL-2  summary and the RL-25 summary have been added to the program.

January 6, 2012 (Production Release 2011.1.3.122)

1 The T4A  slip (two per page) printed the payer's account number in the space reserved for the payer's name and address, but only in the case where the company name part 2 was left blank.  This has been corrected.
2 The T4 adjustment report did not transfer overpayments of CPP and EI to the designated T4.
3 TheT4 slip (three per page) now prints the full employer address in the top corner of the slip.
4 Corrected a problem where the check for program updates function generated an error when no Internet connection was available.
5 Corrected a problem with the E-Filing History Report which sometimes incorrectly recorded the date the electronic file was created.

December 15, 2011 (Early-Production Release 2011.1.2.121)

1 All forms are ready for the 2011 taxation year with the following exceptions:
  • The federal and Quebec partnership forms will be updated in a future release of AvanTax eForms.
  • The Quebec TP-646 will be updated in a future release of AvanTax eForms.
2 According to new CRA regulations for the 2011 taxation year, EI insurable earnings (box 24) and CPP/QPP pensionable earnings (box 26) must always be reported on the T4 slip.

Prior to 2011, if box 24 or box 26 was left blank it was assumed to be equal to the lesser of employment income (box 14) and the maximum insurable/pensionable earnings for the year. Under the new regulations, a zero or blank in the field means the insurable/pensionable earnings for the year were zero. Hence, the preparer must now ensure that the correct amounts are entered in these two boxes.

The new release of AvanTax eForms takes these changes into consideration. The data entry routines are optimized to set these numbers initially to the amount in box 14 (employment income), limited to the appropriate maximum. However, the user is required to verify that the correct amounts are entered if there is an exception. Similarly, users who import T4 data from a spreadsheet

must enter the correct amounts in the pensionable and insurable earnings columns in the spreadsheet.

October 4, 2011 (Pre-Production Release 2011.1.1.117)

1 We renamed T4 TimeSaver to AvanTax eForms, borrowing AvanTax from our Automobile Taxable Benefits software package. We're still the same people; we just want our name to better reflect what our software actually does.
2 Processing of T5008 and RL-18 slips have been added to the system.
3 Processing of TFSA slips has been added to the system
4 Processing of RRSP slips has been added to the system.
5 The Plus and Enterprise versions can now import slip information from any XML submission file that the software can produce.
6 The Plus and Enterprise versions can now export slip information to CSV format.  The resulting CSV file can be edited with Excel and re-imported back into AvanTax eForms.  Possible applications for the export functionality would be to create a different type of slip from the data or to do bulk editing or corrections.

Converting Prior Year Program and User Settings

Your tax slip data can be rolled forward from the 2010 T4 TimeSaver by selecting Convert Last Year's Databases from the Tools menu or Convert a 2010 Database from the File menu.  AvanTax eForms does not automatically import user settings from the previous year's software during the installation process.  You may use Import User Information from Last Year's T4 TimeSaver from the Tools menu to import user information.

System Requirements

AvanTax eForms is designed for and tested on the following Windows platforms:  Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

The Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 must be installed on the computer. If, during program installation, a Network Administrator Installation is selected, the .NET Framework installation package will be copied to the network location and will be installed if required when NETNODE.EXE is run.  If a Workstation Installation is selected and the Framework is not installed, you will be prompted to download the  .NET Framework installation  package from the Internet.

Installing AvanTax eForms

If you downloaded the install file (eFormsSetup.msi) from www.avantax.ca, simply run it and follow the instructions.  If you are installing from a CD, insert the CD and wait a few seconds for the setup program to start up. If it does not start automatically, run D:SETUP.EXE (replacing D: with the drive letter of your CD drive). Follow the on-screen instructions.  If you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7 you may have to right click on the installation file and select "Run as administrator" to start the installation.

Network Installation

If you want to run AvanTax eForms from more than one workstation, you can do a Workstation installation on each computer, but for ease of installation and centralizing subsequent program updates, it is recommended that you install the program on a network drive where it can be accessed by all network users. This type of installation is called a Network Administrator installation.

When you start the installation, select "Network Administrator" as the type of installation and complete the installation to a network drive. Then run NETNODE.EXE from each workstation to install the program on the workstations. A shortcut will be created on the workstation's desktop and in the Start menu.

When installed as a "node", AvanTax eForms can also run in off-line mode, which allows laptop users to run the program when out of the office (accessing local data and user settings), and then reconnect to the network when back in the office.

Registering AvanTax eForms

To register this copy of the program simply enter the unique authorization code issued to you by ELM Computer Systems. Until this code is entered, the program will print "VOID" on the slips and summaries, and some of the features of AvanTax eForms Plus or Enterprise will be unavailable. You may continue to use AvanTax eForms without registering the program. All the data you enter will be saved. The opportunity to register will be available every time you start the program until registration has been completed.

Installing Adobe Acrobat Reader

AvanTax eForms uses the free Adobe Acrobat Reader for viewing and printing returns (slips and summaries). You must have Acrobat 5.x or above. To install or upgrade Acrobat Reader you may download Acrobat Reader from Adobe's website http://get.adobe.com/reader.   If you have difficulty downloading or installing the software, visit Adobe's website at www.adobe.com.
