1 The two-per-page T4A slip had separate boxes for the recipient's surname and first name/initial pre-printed on the form. AvanTax eForms printed the entire recipient name in the surname box using the standard format (SURNAME, First, Initial). We made a change to the printing to improve readability of the slip. We made this change for cosmetic purposes only. All T4A slips produced by any previous version of the software are perfectly sufficient as is. As such, release 2016.1.2.116 is entirely optional.

1 We corrected a problem on the RL-1 Summary where Box 51, the Contribution to the Workforce Skills Development and Recognition Fund (WSDRF) may be calculated incorrectly.

The amount for Box 51 is supposed to be calculated in the event that your payroll is greater than $2,000,000.00. However, the program calculated it when the payroll is over $1,000,000.00. Therefore, box 51 would be calculated incorrectly if the payroll is between $1,000,000.00 and $2,000,000.00

Please note that this issue affects the summary only and not the printing of slips or the generation of XML submission files.

You can resolve this issue without updating to the newest release of AvanTax eForms if you override box 50 on the summary and set it to 0.00 if necessary.
2 We corrected a problem that may affect the printing and XML filing of T5013 (Federal partnership) slips in release 2016.1.2.114 or earlier of AvanTax eForms.

If you are preparing T5013 slips you may encounter a situation where one of the slips cannot be printed. If you have produced an XML file for CRA it is also possible that one of the slips may be excluded from the submission file. Please read on for details.

This situation will only occur if you are preparing T5013 slips and you have selected to automatically transfer the value account 8299 (Total Revenue) or 9369 (Net non-farming income) from Schedule 125 to the slips and summary.

Description of the issue:
  1. When printing T5013 slips you may find that one of the slips will not print. If you print all the slips in a batch, one slip will be missing. If you try to print this slip individually the system will give the message “There is no data in the selected company or companies to be printed”. The missing slip will be the first one in the list when the slips are displayed in data entry sequence.

  2. If the issue identified in item 1 above has occurred then the system would also exclude the same slip from the XML file created for submission to CRA.
  1. Upgrade to the newest version of AvanTax eForms.

  2. If you have already submitted XML files for partnership forms and have also selected to automatically transfer the value account 8299 (Total Revenue) or 9369 (Net non-farming income) from Schedule 125 to the slips and summary then there may be a slip missing from the XML file. You will have to check your XML file to determine if there is a missing slip.

    • Find the XML file that you submitted. Double click on it to open it in a browser. Scroll to the bottom of the file and find the tag which says . It should be about 8 lines up from the bottom. If the number of slips is correct then you do not have a problem. If the number of slips is one less than you expected you will have to prepare and submit an additional XML containing the one missing slip only.

    • If you have reviewed your XML file and have determined that there is a slip missing, or if you need help making this determination, or if you need assistance preparing the second submission file, then please call our support line and we will help you diagnose and correct the issue.

1 A print alignment issue has been corrected on the T5007 summary.
2 The Electronic Filing validation warnings report gave the warning message 'Technical contact email address - invalid e-mail address' in the case where the second email address in the transmitter setup screen was left blank.

In this case, it was a spurious error message and can be ignored. The second email address is an optional field in the transmitter setup.

The new version of the program does not give this warning in the situation where the second email address is left blank in the transmitter setup.

Converting Prior Year Program and User Settings

Your tax slip data can be rolled forward from AvanTax eForms 2016 by selecting Convert Last Year's Databases from the Tools menu or Convert a 2015 Database from the File menu.  AvanTax eForms does not automatically import user settings from the previous year's software during the installation process.  You may use Import User Information from Last Year's Program in the Tools menu to import user information.

System Requirements

AvanTax eForms is designed for and tested on the following Windows platforms:  Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10.

The Microsoft .NET Framework Version 4.0 or higher must be installed on the computer. If, during program installation, a Network Administrator Installation is selected, the .NET Framework installation package will be copied to the network location and will be installed if required when NETNODE.EXE is run. If a Workstation Installation is selected and the Framework is not installed, you will be prompted to download the .NET Framework installation  package from the Internet.

Installing AvanTax eForms

If you downloaded the install file (eForms2016Setup.exe) from www.avantax.ca, simply run it and follow the instructions. If you are installing from a CD, insert the CD and wait a few seconds for the setup program to start up. If it does not start automatically, run D:SETUP.EXE (replacing D: with the drive letter of your CD drive). Follow the on-screen instructions.  If you are running Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10, you may have to right click on the installation file and select "Run as administrator" to start the installation.

Network Installation

If you want to run AvanTax eForms from more than one workstation, you can do a Workstation installation on each computer, but for ease of installation and centralizing subsequent program updates, it is recommended that you install the program on a network drive where it can be accessed by all network users. This type of installation is called a Network Administrator installation.

When you start the installation, select "Network Administrator" as the type of installation and complete the installation to a network drive. Then run NETNODE.EXE from each workstation to install the program on the workstations. A shortcut will be created on the workstation's desktop and in the Start menu.

When installed as a "node", AvanTax eForms can also run in off-line mode, which allows laptop users to run the program when out of the office (accessing local data and user settings), and then reconnect to the network when back in the office.

Registering AvanTax eForms

To register this copy of the program, simply enter the unique authorization code issued to you by ELM Computer Systems. Until this code is entered, the program will print "VOID" on the slips and summaries, and some of the features of AvanTax eForms Standard or Enterprise will be unavailable. You may continue to use AvanTax eForms without registering the program. All the data you enter will be saved. The opportunity to register will be available every time you start the program until registration has been completed.

Installing Adobe Acrobat Reader

AvanTax eForms uses the free Adobe Acrobat Reader for viewing and printing returns (slips and summaries). You must have Acrobat 5.x or above. To install or upgrade Acrobat Reader you may download Acrobat Reader from Adobe's website http://get.adobe.com/reader.   If you have difficulty downloading or installing the software, visit Adobe's website at www.adobe.com.
